Ironically, it was the onset of the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997 that triggered the explosive growth of project interpretation/translation in Korea. To salvage the beleaguered economy, the government undertook bold deregulations in an effort to attract foreign direct investment (FDI), and foreign businesses ventured into Korea en masse. Amid the collapses of Korean domestic companies in succession, M&A-related businesses thrived: law firms, accounting/financial firms, consulting firms, and interpretation/translation services as well. The interpretation/translation market rapidly grew after the Asian currency crisis, and the total size of the market remains large today.
